Whether it be the ubiquitous daiquiri stand or the flambeaux of Bananas Foster at Brennan’s, you might have noticed that rum flows pretty easily in the Crescent City.

Indeed, New Orleans has been a producer of sugar cane since its inception in the 18th century. But despite early attempts to make cheap rum or tafia, an unaged byproduct of cane distillation, most rum was imported from the Caribbean. Rum became a staple spirit here and was the barrel tapped to toast the victory of the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. A rum barrel was even used to preserve and ship back to England a British General who fell during the conflict!

From pirates, to Prohibition bootlegging, to the invention of the Hurricane cocktail during WWII, and with the rise of modern delights like Old New Orleans and Bayou, Mikko Machionne uncovers how rum has been a constant link through our most infamous moments in history.
