Few things are as uniquely American as good ol’ jazz music and New Orleans is none other than the birthplace of jazz.

Stemming from the early African rhythms of Congo Square with later influences of the Caribbean, jazz developed into ragtime, blues, big band, swing, scat and more. While some entertainers left the city to seek their fortunes elsewhere, others came up through the bar scene, marching in parades, and playing for jazz funerals and second lines. Elders mentored young would be musicians and passed the time honored tradition from one generation to the next. Buddy Bolden, Louis Armstrong, and other greats are all part of that rich musical culture New Orleans jazz is still world renowned for.

Join Edward J. Branley as he traces the roots of this beloved genre and its evolution from the sugar cane plantation spirituals to the infamous Storyville red light district to the music we hear in the streets today.
