Imagine you’re strolling through the French Quarter and you stumble upon a group of street musicians. Though not an uncommon occurrence, if you see a large crowd assembled and it just so happens to be Doreen’s Jazz New Orleans, then you are in for a treat!
Among the most dynamic of performers, band leader Doreen Ketchens has been called “Queen Clarinet,” “the female Louis Armstrong,” and “Lady Louie” by those who have heard her perform. Her husband Lawrence is also a member of the group, playing tuba, valve trombone and piano. He can even play the sousaphone and the drums simultaneously! The group’s mission is to spread the artistry and culture of traditional New Orleans music all over the world through performance and education. Having represented the city in Africa, Asia, Brazil, Canada, Columbia, Europe, Mexico, Russia, and the United States and with over twenty three recordings, their reach is prolific. They are beloved by the local community and frequent travelers to the city alike.
If you are lucky, you can catch them somewhere along Royal St. most weekend afternoons. With a talent and energy that is downright infectious, don’t be surprised if they get you dancing in the street! And don’t forget to tip the musicians!
