“My style is too jazzy for blues and too bluesy for jazz, so I have been told. I like to take a jazz song and make it dirty, or take a rough blues tune and clean it up just enough to get the story across on the piano instead of guitar.”
Joe Kennedy first laid his fingers on the keys at the young age of eight. He began studying jazz music at the age of fifteen and frequented local blues jams in his home state of Wisconsin, where the performers took a shine to him, inviting him to join them on tour after he turned eighteen. Coming up in back alley juke joints and seedy clubs along the shores of Lake Michigan, he was influenced by the Delta blues and Chicago blues artists of the midwest. His funky jazzy blues style has been compared to Ray Charles and New Orleans’ own Harry Connick Jr. In 2013, Kennedy solidified his place in the New Orleans music scene by joining the Dukes of Dixieland as a full time pianist.
504-Tified, a reference to the city’s area code, is an aggressive mix of New Orleans rhythm and blues, trad jazz standards and more obscure traditional jazz.
